The Spirit of NineT” served as the development team’s compass while creating the new R 12 NineT, which was designed to emulate the popular R NineT and preserve its timeless style and high degree of customizability. With its sleek appearance and dynamic riding experience on twisting roads, the new R 12 NineT is a beautiful roadster that wants to create an impact in urban settings. Personalization is more common than ever. Over time, a very innovative ecosystem has emerged as a result of the trend that the R nineT’s 2013 introduction set. The BMW Motorrad Heritage family is the result of BMW Motorrad’s response to this desire by creating an entire model family based around the R NineT. Customization and customization have been a burning desire in the hearts of many motorcycle riders ever since. Therefore, the question was not if the R NineT model family would have a successor, but rather, how it may even more truly and captivatingly satisfy the demands and wants of customers.

The seat, the aluminum tank with brushed and clear-coated side panels, and the tail hump of the BMW R 12 NineT combine to form a dynamic, rising line. Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad: “The clear tank/seat/rear line, reminiscent of the classic /5 or the iconic R 90 S from the 1970s, dominates the purist design language.” The tank itself appears to be a traditional BMW boxer tank at first glance, with the knee contact and usual bend in the lower edge. Another throwback to 1970s BMW motorbikes is the side covers on the new R 12 nineT, which give it a true Roadster appearance around the frame triangle.”

The small and compact tail section supports the emphasis on fundamental design. Compared to the previous model, the reduced gasoline tank (1.2 inches shorter and narrower at the back) guarantees far better ergonomics and a more forward-facing seating posture.

The steel tank on the new BMW R 12 highlights the cruiser design language in a classic teardrop shape and produces a descending line when combined with the conventional solo seat and the curving, low-mounted rear fender. The steel tank is evocative of the so-called ‘Toaster Tanks’ of the 1970s BMW /5 models. This appearance is enhanced by the larger 19-inch front wheel and the smaller 16-inch rear wheel. The more casual seating posture, which features a lower seat height and broader handlebars, is another nod to the traditional cruiser style.

Strong Focus On Details

Numerous elements of the new Heritage models, such as the carefully sculpted front fender bracket or the LED headlamp on the R 12 NineT with a black-framed light element, demonstrate the attention to detail in these vehicles. Additionally, the instrument panel blends in perfectly with the overall design. The R 12 has a single round instrument, whereas the R 12 NineT has two conventional round instruments. Smoke-tinted smoke lenses are fitted into the LED turn signals located on the upper fork bridge. The new R 12 has integrated working turn signals, while the R 12 NineT also has smoked rear turn signal lenses.

While European versions have a central taillight, the LED rear lights on the R 12 nineT in the United States are tastefully and subtly incorporated into the turn signal lights. The exhaust system, which has two rear stacked mufflers with conical end pieces, also reflects the idea of a traditional roadster and cruiser.

The side covers demonstrate the BMW Motorrad Design Team’s meticulous attention to detail. Painted in the same body color, they show off the shiny chrome-plated emblems, with the R 12 nineT having a model number on it and the R 12 not. The emblems on Option 719 automobiles are completed with matching writing. Furthermore, the new R 12 nineT and R 12 are adorned with an aluminum frame insignia that bears their model identification.

Power and torque are provided by the Boxer engine for both leisurely cruising and spirited riding.

BMW motorbikes have been associated with the two-cylinder boxer engine and shaft drive over the last century. The new BMW R 12 nineT and R 12 models, which were introduced during the “100 Years of BMW Motorrad” jubilee year, highlight this unique powerplant layout in keeping with this heritage. BMW Motorrad boxer engines are renowned for their distinctive, tough design, generous torque, and distinctive sound, having been around since the introduction of the first BMW motorcycle, the R 32, in 1923.

With a 1,170 cc size, a 101 mm diameter, 73 mm stroke, and an air/oil cooling system, the boxer engine produces 109 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 85 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm in the R 12 nineT. The R 12 produces 81 lb-ft of torque at 6,000 rpm and 95 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. There is an 8,500 rpm maximum engine speed.

Two overhead, chain-driven camshafts (DOHC) per cylinder operate the only radially oriented valves in the combustion chamber of this BMW boxer engine. Hemispherical shims are used to modify the valve clearance, while lightweight cam followers are in charge of valve functioning. The cylinder head covers have undergone a makeover that was influenced by the classic two-valve boxer engines made by BMW. Power is sent to the back wheel via the drive shaft and the reliable six-speed gearbox.

In terms of technology, performance, and torque delivery, this is also true for the new BMW R 12 nineT and R 12, whose boxer engine is based on the engine that debuted with the BMW HP 2 Sport in 2007 and is regarded as an iconic representation of BMW boxer engines.

Now fitted under the seat is the new airbox

The new R 12 models have an entirely redesigned chassis, which includes an upgraded airbox. There is no longer an air intake duct behind the tank in the airbox, unlike the R NineT series that came before it. Under the seat, everything is now entirely incorporated.

The distinctive boxer sound is produced by the new “Twin Pipe” exhaust system.

The reverse-cone cap design and two rear mufflers of the left-hand-mounted “Twin Pipe” exhaust system satisfy the needs of both cruisers and lovers of traditional roadster styling. An exhaust flap is no longer necessary, in contrast to the R NineT series that came before it.

The catalytic converter is situated in the front silencer of the new manifold routing, which is located in front of the rear wheel. The rear silencer on the new R 12 NineT is electro-polished, while the manifolds and front silencer are chrome-plated. Exhaust personalization options are available with the original BMW Motorrad accessories for the R 12 nineT and R 12, matching the style of the two new R 12 models to individual tastes. An optional titanium sports silencer adds a very sophisticated touch.

Riding modes, standard DTC, and Engine Drag Torque Control

The new R 12 nineT is equipped with regular “Rain”, “Road”, and “Dynamic” riding modes, while the new R 12 has “Roll” and “Rock” riding modes, allowing the user to customize their riding style to suit their choice. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which guarantees a high degree of driving safety when accelerating, is a feature of both of the new R 12 models. The new R 12 models now come standard with engine drag torque control.

Although DTC makes riding safer when accelerating—especially on slick roads—Engineering Drag Control keeps the rear wheel from sliding when you suddenly let up on the throttle or downshift—even when you’re braking. Engine Drag Torque Control allows the new R 12 models to identify this threat early on.

The throttle valves are opened in milliseconds to compensate for drag torque and keep the rear tire in the ideal friction range, based on the coefficient of friction between the tire and the road surface. This leads to even more safety, particularly on slick roads. The R 12 NineT’s “Rain” mode increases safety on slick roads by reducing throttle response and increasing the sensitivity of the traction and torque control systems. The DTC control and Engine Drag Torque Control systems are optimized for dry and high-traction road conditions, and the throttle response is matched when operating in “Road” mode.

You may utilize the full power of the new R 12 nineT in “Dynamic mode.” More slip at the back tire is made possible by the throttle’s immediate reaction, and even in fast cornering, Dynamic Traction Control maintains the ideal amount of traction control. The new R 12’s “Roll” mode guarantees the best possible throttle response, and the DTC and Engine Drag Control systems are tuned for peak efficiency on every kind of road. The rider may fully utilize the R 12’s dynamic capability while using the “Rock” riding mode.

The throttle responds immediately and spontaneously, whereas the DTC gives a bit more leeway. In the “Rock” mode, the bike has a unique feature where it idles at a purposefully erratic pace.
